Cinco de Mayo Party Must-Haves

Cinco de Mayo holds a special place in my heart because it's also my best friend's birthday. In our circle of friends, Cinco de Mayo is known as Drinko de Kaelin. That's why when Sauza Tequila asked if I might share my Cinco de Mayo party tips I immediately said yes. You see, Kaelin and I have thrown our share of Drinko de Kaelin parties over the past 8 years...we're kind of pros.

Every successful Cinco de Mayo party has three elements: margaritas, beer and guacamole. Some may argue a piƱata is a must but it's just icing on the cake!  Kaelin and I had a girl's night on Friday and we did a little R&D in preparation for her upcoming birthday. We tried out the new Sauza-rita recipe plus I made my signature guac...

- Sauza-rita Recipe -
1 can Sauza® Blue Silver 100% Agave Tequila
1 bottle of light beer
1 can frozen limeade
1 can water

We were surprised when we saw that beer was one of the ingredients, but the carbonation gave the marg a kick of fizz that was super refreshing. This recipe would be great for hot summer days, too! Limes, fun straws, and cute glasses are always an added bonus but rimming salt is a must!

No Cinco de Mayo party is complete without some great guacamole and boy do I make a mean guac! It's the Latina in me (shh... it's my mom's recipe).

- Guacamole Recipe -
2 avocados
1/4 cup chopped tomatos
1/8 cup chopped red onions
cilantro
3 dashes of garlic powder (secret ingredient)
salt to taste

The proportions are kind of up to you (taste test throughout) and sometimes I leave out the cilantro because a lot of people don't like it. Good rule of thumb: one avocado per person. There is something about garlic powder that gives the guacamole a unique and delicious taste. Try it and tell me what you think!

Don't forget the limes! They look pretty + taste fab inside a good Mexican beer.

There you have it. Margaritas, guacamole and beer are your Cinco de Mayo party must-haves!

  3. I'm not much of a beer drinker, but beer added to the margarita sounds like a cool combo. I'll have to try the Sauza-rita recipe for some summertime drinking!
